The government of India has implemented many reforms for women over a period of time that have succeeded in giving voice to women and their issues. Started in the 1970’s, the Women’s Studies Cell has devoted itself to advocating the rights of women who were subjected to gender discrimination. As the number of issues grew in number, more women were encouraged to voice out their opinions against various injustices stacked against them.
Women’s Christian College initiated her Women’s Studies Cell in the year 2017. The cell is a centre of study that focuses on women’s rights. The cell deals with providing information and creating awareness in women; in building them up and enabling them to gain recognition in society at large, through awareness programmes and motivational talks. The cell mainly focuses on students from WCC and from outside as well. The UGC was helpful in setting up this centre in college. Unfortunately, after the 7th Plan of UGC, funding was terminated. Although the centre is not funded by the UGC presently, it does not stop WCC from pursuing her mission of encouraging women through various awareness programmes.
This year, due to lockdown, all events were conducted through online platforms. A national level webinar on gender sensitisation was held. Additionally, a program on Cyber Security was conducted by Dr Varun Kapoor from Madhya Pradesh to create awareness about women’s safety in the online world. The third awareness program was on drug abuse.
For the academic year 2020-21, the Principal of WCC, Dr Lilian I Jasper is planning to include academic initiatives in the Centre for Women’s Studies. There are also plans to conduct a certificate course on Gender Studies/NGO management and various related workshops. A training program on literacy for women will also be held. Furthermore, the cell will collaborate with other departments in college. Through such collaborations the students can benefit from shared perspectives and experiences.
