Women's Christian College desires for its students to acquire not only academic knowledge but also equips them to adapt to the outside world. The college provides foreign language courses for students who are passionate to learn languages such as German and Spanish. These courses enable students to be exposed to a new language. Moreover, on completion of A1 and A2 levels, students can write their exams directly at Inaword.
The duration of these courses is normally 50 hours, but due to the lockdown and lack of time it was reduced to 40 hours. WCC offers these courses at reasonable rates as compared to other institutes.
This year the courses were conducted in small groups of 17 students each. Despite everything being online, the teachers for both courses were able to adapt to the online platform instantly and made classes interactive and engaging for the students. Infact, this year nothing was compromised. Instead, through this online platform both students and teachers were benefited. Students who missed a class, were sent recordings of the classes they missed. Teachers could teach from the comfort of their homes without the hassle of travel. Additional videos were sent to the students for extra exposure to the language. Dr Ranjini Christopher, French Professor at WCC explained, "Since everything is online, the students are put in a situation where they have to speak."
Besides, no time was wasted because the students could simply join using the classroom link. The students who joined these courses had positive responses that over-weighed the negative ones. Shemula, a first-year student of Computer Science from the German course explained, "We did not expect it to be interactive, but our teacher brought out the fact that German is a fun language through various games and activities. Overall I enjoyed the course." Similarly, Ananya, a first-year student of AZBT from the Spanish course shared her views. She said, "It was very interesting and we learnt a lot practically. I liked my teacher so much that I plan to take up the second part of the course next year as well." Finally, the students put up a show and did an amazing job virtually.
Certificates will be given when the college reopens. Furthermore, this time the bookseller was able to deliver textbooks and students who were abroad, received pdf versions. At present, Dr Ranjini Christopher is doing her A2 in Spanish and German which she said she would have never been able to do if not for the lockdown. Despite the lockdown disabling the live sessions of students and teachers, WCC's foreign language courses are a great success!
