Social responsibility is inseparable from youth as it is the symbol of optimistic energy in any society. The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a voluntary association founded to develop a student's personality through community service. The NSS team of Women’s Christian College, despite the pandemic, has not let go of their zeal in acting as a link between college and society.
The NSS team managed to conduct several webinars for the benefit of volunteers. Interesting and thought-provoking topics such as Forging a new future after COVID 19, Career and Beyond, Sanitation, Health, Hygiene and Sustainable Consumption were discussed extensively in these webinars. To acknowledge international social awareness on World Animal Day, World Yoga Day, World Population Day and World Suicide Prevention Day, the NSS team conducted Quizzes and organized Webinars for the volunteers. The major events focused not only on the well-being of society as a whole but also on the mental health of its volunteers during the pandemic. A webinar was conducted on ‘Young People and their Mental Health in the Changing World’. These events were attended by more than 200 student volunteers from their homes.
The NSS team ventured into a new way of reaching out to the community even in the current pandemic situation. This year, they added ‘Volunteering Call’ in their agenda, by which student volunteers provided counselling and encouragement in areas of Mental Health and Women’s Empowerment. The NSS volunteers also came forward to be a part of FICCI FLO, an all-India forum for women and made phone calls to help women achieve economic empowerment and enhance livelihood opportunities during these uncertain times.
A group of volunteers has been growing mini-farms of fruits and vegetables in their homes. Tree plantation, which is a part of regular NSS activity, was conducted with their help. Over 300 volunteers planted trees in their homes, thus carrying on their regular NSS work even during this global pandemic situation. In addition, NSS also introduced various online competitions on arts and cultural events that kept them engaged. NSS Day celebrations included events such as Just-a-minute, Connections and Treasure hunt. Leaving no stone unturned to uphold their motto “Not Me But You”, NSS attempted every possible way to serve and help make a better society during this pandemic.
